ESDW: a selection of climate initiatives in our facilities

Clariane Group

Throughout the year, our facilities are actively committed to climate protection. To mark European Sustainable Development Week (ESDW), we would like to share five initiatives that we have implemented in the various countries where we operate. These initiatives illustrate our ongoing commitment to promoting sustainable actions. Whether it’s reducing the carbon footprint of our catering services, optimising the energy management of our buildings or promoting sustainable mobility for our residents/patients, each action contributes to building a more environmentally-friendly future!

France: less CO2 on your plate, it can be done!

Our catering services are one of Clariane France’s biggest sources of greenhouse gas emissions, mainly due to the emissions generated by agriculture to produce food.

Since 2020, the Group has been committed to a plan to reduce its carbon footprint, which includes:

  • reducing food waste;
  • introducing plant-based protein alternatives in meals (2 to 3 dishes per week), particularly in our Inicea clinics;
  • using seasonal fruit and vegetables, which have a lower carbon footprint than greenhouse-grown fruit and vegetables.

These efforts have already resulted in a 15% reduction in the carbon footprint of Clariane’s catering in France in 2023 compared with 2020.

Germany: spotlight on the “Green K” Award

Every year, Korian Germany rewards a facility for its performance in energy and resource management. The “Green K” award is officially presented at a dedicated event within the facility, which also receives a grant to organise a team event.

This year, the Sandwerder Psychiatric Care and Support Centre in Berlin Wannsee received the “Green K” award in the Energy Management category. Impressive progress has been made thanks to the commitment of the team, who have successfully implemented all the measures in the energy-saving campaign.

Between September 2023 and April 2024, the facility reduced its electricity and heat consumption by 22% compared with the previous year, despite the fact that the building is old. At the same time, indoor temperatures have remained within the target range, as confirmed by CO2 sensors. These savings show that significant progress in energy management is also possible in older buildings!

Italy: green mobility for our patients/residents

In Milan, Korian has teamed up with Mbility, a local start-up specialising in transport for people with disabilities or mobility issues. Mbility has created an app that makes it easy to book rides with vehicles adapted for our patients/residents, making the process more efficient and saving team members’ time.

The partnership has been further strengthened by the “100% green” project, through which Mbility has provided Korian with a fleet of electric vehicles in the colours of both partners, now in use in the 6 Korian establishments in Milan. So, whether it’s a medical appointment or a cultural outing, our patients’ and residents’ journeys are now eco-friendly!

Spain: saving energy all year round

Seasonal guides have been drawn up for Clariane Spain team members to promote energy savings throughout the year.

For example, the summer guide shows lowering the temperature of the air conditioning by one degree increases energy consumption by around 8%. There are two golden rules for ensuring the well-being of users while limiting energy consumption: close monitoring of indoor temperatures and good maintenance of air conditioning systems.

At the beginning of each season, the corresponding guide is sent to all employees, along with an invitation to the online training course on eco-friendly practices. The guides are also used by facility managers to raise awareness among their teams.

Belgium and the Netherlands: #KorianForThePlanet

In Belgium and the Netherlands, the “Korian for the Planet” communication campaigns are run throughout the year, with a different theme every two months. All the important aspects of the Group’s environmental footprint are covered: the various means of reducing energy consumption, such as temperature and lighting management, as well as waste and water management.

Each campaign is rolled out through several media: the eco-friendly practices linked to each theme are presented in our facilities.
