Launch of the non-pharmacological interventions’ registry: feedback on our participation in the NPIS Summit 2024
Held on 16-18 October 2024 in Paris, the NPIS Summit saw the launch of an innovative registry dedicated to non-pharmacological interventions (NPIs). Co-developed by the Non-Pharmacological Intervention Society (NPIS), the French health authorities and academic partners, this registry represents a decisive step towards more personalised and sustainable medicine. From now on, it will provide access to these prevention, care and support solutions, all certified according to rigorous scientific criteria.
A major step towards more personalised care for every patient
The aim of the NPIS model, a scientifically recognised framework for evaluating NPIs, is to improve the safety, traceability and management of NPIs, by facilitating access to recognised practices and supporting research into the best approaches.
Thanks to this approach, healthcare professionals now have a rigorous scientific framework for implementing non-pharmacological interventions centred on the needs of individual patients.
Clariane, an NPIS partner, was represented by Prof. Antoine Piau, the Group's Medical, Ethics and Health Innovation Director, and Sabine Gourgeon, Director of Gerontological Projects in the Group's medical department.
Speaking at the conference, Prof. Antoine Piau emphasised the importance of this standard, saying: "I am delighted with the creation of a scientifically-recognised registry for evaluating NPIs and the first 10 protocols. This validates therapeutics and makes the practices of healthcare professionals more secure.”
Sabine Gourgeon contributed her expertise to two round tables: one on the economic, regulatory, training, operational and informational implications of NPIs, and the other on the NPI value chain in the service of personalised medicine and sustainable health.
Non-pharmacological interventions, a key component of our Positive Care approach
With Positive Care, we have designed and defined an integral approach to care rooted in evidence-based medicine, where care settings are also living spaces.
NPIs are a fundamental pillar of our Positive Care approach, offering a therapeutic alternative that respects people and focuses on their needs and overall well-being.
That's why, in all our Korian facilities in Europe, we integrate these interventions into our care for residents, following a personalised and individualised assessment. At the end of 2023, 100% of Clariane's long-term care nursing homes that have been part of the Group for at least two years have received training in these methods.
In practical terms, what do they involve? NPIs are a set of care techniques, environmental approaches and human approaches that aim to:
- improve people's well-being and quality of life;
- maintain cognitive, motor and sensory skills;
- develop social skills;
• reduce psychological and behavioural symptoms.
Audrey Algard, the coordinating doctor at the Korian Les Terrasses du XXe care home, explains the different types of NPIs that can be set up in facilities.
Clariane supports the IPSE diploma from the University of Caen Normandy
We believe that NPIs are part of tomorrow's medicine.
That's why Clariane France, alongside the Médéric Alzheimer Foundation, supports the IPSE university diploma from the University of Caen Normandy, launched at the start of the 2023 academic year. The degree focuses on non-pharmacological interventions aimed at, among others, patients living with Alzheimer's disease.
This innovative hybrid programme trains caregivers in psychosocial and environmental intervention methods (commonly referred to as NPIs). It is aimed at professionals working with people living with Alzheimer's or a related disease in nursing homes, at home or in hospitals, who offer NPIs and/or who wish to deepen their knowledge of NPIs.
The university diploma, which takes one year to complete, will enhance the expertise of our teams in supporting our residents.
